Panelists Dennis Jaffe, Meghan Juday and Mike Klauer will share the lessons that family business have learned over the last 100+ years

Years and generations mark these family businesses as they continue to look forward. What does it take to be a successful 100-year-old company? This session will explore lessons learned by panelist who are part of 100-year-old family businesses and know that no family can avoid tragedy, downturns, or crisis. However, the lessons they have carried forward have allowed them to survive and find ways to thrive.


Dennis Jaffe // Author and Senior Research Fellow at Banyan Global Family Business Advisors 

Dennis, a San Francisco-based advisor to families about family business, governance, wealth, and philanthropy, is the author of five books about the longevity of family businesses. His global insights have led to teaching or consulting engagements in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. The Family Firm Institute awarded him the 2017 International Award for service, and in 2005 he received the Beckhard Award for service to the field. In 2020 he was awarded a special commendation as an individual thought leader in the field of wealth management by the Family Wealth Report. He has a B.A. in Philosophy, M.A. in Management, and Ph.D. in sociology, all from Yale University, and is professor emeritus of organizational systems and psychology at Saybrook University in San Francisco. 



Meghan Juday // Fourth-Generation Leader and Chairman of the Board at IDEAL Industries 

Meghan is an enthusiastic champion for family businesses who draws on her experience in her family's business, which has been in operation for over 105 years. She cut her teeth in the family business and further honed her skills as a business analyst and project manager at Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC). As the IDEAL Family Council Chair for 14 years, Meghan increased family engagement and mitigated risk. She reimagined family roles within the corporation, creating a family development and education program based on family governance and director development. The program gives family members equal access to leadership and director roles with selection based on merit. The leader and author serves on the Brightstar Capital Partners Advisory Council, sits on the editorial board and is a contributor to the NACD Private Company Directorship, sits on the editorial board for Family Business Magazine, and sits on the Private Directors Advisory Board. Meghan writes for Private Company Director, Family Business Magazine and other publications. Most notably, Meghan founded The Lodis Forum, an international peer group of female board chairs, vice-chairs and lead directors. Her consultant work focuses on family and corporate governance. Meghan lives in Philadelphia with her husband and two boys. 



Mike Klauer // Fifth-Generation Leader and President at Klauer Manufacturing 

Mike is a member of the fifth generation of the Klauer family to manage Klauer Manufacturing in Dubuque, IA. Having worked on the plant floor in his teenage years, Mike came back to the family business in 2012 as CFO In 2018, he became the sixth president of the now 152-year-old business. Prior to moving back to Dubuque, Mike worked for several years in Omaha, NE in both investment management and private equity. He has a BA from the University of Iowa and was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2003. Mike and his wife keep busy raising their three teenage children.
