IRDC Friday Zoominar—Preserving local ownership: Strategies for longevity in family business

Friday, February 27, 2026 (9:00 AM - 10:00 AM) (CST)

Description

Hosted by Bill Menner of the Iowa Rural Development Council (IRDC), this Friday Zoominar will feature the service offerings of the University of Northern Iowa Family Business Center. Dan Beenken and Kristen Toppin will chat with Bill about the significant output that family businesses have throughout the state of Iowa.

Family owned businesses are the backbone of Iowa’s rural communities but many face critical transition points that can put local ownership at risk. In this session, we will discuss what the UNI Family Business Center does and will share practical, proven strategies that help family businesses plan for continuity, navigate generational transitions, and remain locally owned for the long term. We will explore how succession planning, governance, and next generation development directly impact community stability and economic resilience. Attendees will also discuss ways to collaborate with the UNI Family Business Center to bring education, resources, and programming to family businesses across Iowa, strengthening both businesses and the communities they call home.
